How to Say "I live in..." in French (J’habite + country)

To say where you live in French, use j’habite + the correct preposition. It changes with the country’s gender/number (and vowels). Here’s the quick map + mini‑quiz.

Quick rules

  • Feminine countries → en
    J’habite en France. J’habite en Espagne.
  • Masculine countries → au (but en before a vowel)
    J’habite au Canada. J’habite en Iran.
  • Plural countries → aux
    J’habite aux États‑Unis.

Tip: Masculine + vowel sound → use en (Iran, Afghanistan, Oman…).
